The good news is that the number of abortions per year has dropped to the level of 1973, the year when Roe v. Wade first became the law of the land.
This is due to a number of factors: elimination of government financial support, a dramatic decrease in the number of doctors who will do abortions (some counties, indeed some states do not have a single abortion provider), and the advent of free ultrasound imaging in Pregancy Resource Centers (PRCs) where an expectant mom can get an ultrsound picture of her baby.
This does not mean that the day of abortion is over. The bad news is that abortion on demand is still legal through all nine months of pregnancy in the US.
And tragically, most abortion clinics are located in minority communities.
In fact, 13 million African-American babies have died in the womb since 1973. That’s more than 2.5 times the total number of deaths among African-Americans during the same period from AIDS, cancer, accidents, heart disease, and violent crime combined!
And in what amounts to genocide, 33% of all abortions are performed on black women, according to the Centers for Disease Control, even though African-Americans make up only 13 percent of the U.S. population (Source: World Magazine, January 17, 2009, Vol. 24, No. 1).
Unfortunately the new administration in Washington just yesterday voided by Executive Order any retrictions on government funding to organizations that provide abortions nationally and internationally.
Concern for the welfare of women and their babies must be a priority for all Christ-followers who believe that all life is sacred — from the moment of conception through natural death — because all are made in the image of God (Genesis 1;27,28).
Our support of A Womans’ Concern and CareNet-RI through our annual Baby Bottle campaign is one way to do that. Volunteering at those PRCs is another way to help. Adopting a child is a critical way to show the love of God to the least of these. And voting for pro-life candidates puts feet on your values.
