Walking down the Romans Road

So we wrapped up the 4-month-long study — JUSTIFIED! — through the book of Romans yesterday with a five-way conversation with Kim and Mark Wurster, Dave and Ellen Stebbings, and myself. (Listen again here) We each got to talk for a few minutes about what God has been showing us from the book of Romans. And I talked for a few minutes about using “The Romans Road” as a helpful tool when you’re talking with someone about the good news of the gospel of Jesus (Romans 1:16).

The suggestion was that you underline and then number each of these verses (1,2,3, etc.) in the margin of your bible, and under that number write the “chapter & verse” (3:23, etc.) of the next verse in the sequence, so that you have a “road through Romans” to explain the gospel.

As promised, here’s my outline of the Romans Road. (Some include more verses, others shorten the list to just a few.)

ROMANS 1:16 – The good news of Jesus … is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes

ROMANS 3:10 – There is no one righteous, not even one.

ROMANS 3:23 – All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

ROMANS  6:23* – The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

ROMANS 5:8 – God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

ROMANS 3:28 – A person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.

ROMANS 10:9 – If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

ROMANS 8:1 – There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.

ROMANS 8:38, 39 – For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Notice that I underlined Romans 6:23. If you are only going to use a single verse in Romans to explain the good news of the gospel, this is it!

I pray that God’s word will be powerful as you point your friends, family and co-workers to Jesus using the Romans Road.
