Mid-week GNBC Family News | Vol 2 – No 13

APRIL 3, 2019

Hi Good News family!

Here’s a few things you should know this week…

> WHERE IS JESUS NOW? We’ll answer that question this Sunday we’re talking together about Jesus the Son of God. You can jump ahead to be prepared with God’s word; just read Matthew 17; 21; Mark 8-12; 14; Luke 9; 22; John 7-8; 11-12 (Chapter 25 in The Story).

> BAPTISM ON RESURRECTION SUNDAY! Are you a believer in Jesus? Have you been baptized as a believer in Jesus? Not yet? Pick up a Baptism Application from the Information Rack outside the Gym door for info what the Bible says about answers to Frequently Asked Questions about Baptism. Fill out the Application data sheet and give it to any of the elders – Ray Anchan, Freddy Perez, Dave Stebbings of Steve DuPlessie. They’ll schedule a time to talk it all through with you – and get you ready to rise up out the baptism water on the day we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection!

> “CELEBRATION OF LIFE” SERVICE FOR STEVE HIGGINS will be tomorrow, Thursday, April 4th, with visiting hours at GNBC from 5-7PM, followed immediately by a celebration service at GNBC from 7-8pm. Private burial. Details online.

> PRAYER & PRAISE…

  • Pray for Kory and the rest of Steve Higgins’ family as they celebrate God’s grace in Steve’s life.
  • Praise God for a fantastic re-launch of the Second Chance Clothes Ministry last Saturday! The Friday night Life Group showed up Friday night to help set up. Saturday morning there was a line of Attleboro neighbors at the door to receive free clothes in Jesus’ name!

Take my life, and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in ceaseless praise,
Let them flow in ceaseless praise.
Frances Ridley Havergal | b. 1836-d. 1879

Mid-week GNBC Family News | Vol 2 – No 11

MARCH 20, 2019

Hi Good News family!

Here’s a few things you should know this week…

> TEMPTATION Yeah, we all face temptation. What’s the winning strategy? Let’s talk about it this Sunday at 10:45am from the life of Jesus. Read Matthew 3-4; 11; Mark 1-3; Luke 8; and John 1-4 (Chapter 23 in the Story) to get ready to hear from God.

> PRAYER & PRAISE…

  • Praise God for a powerful weekend for the GNBC students at Deep Freeze at Berea! Some serious spiritual life decisions were made. Pray that the students will continue to grow in faith and obedience.
  • Pray for Steve Higgins, Diane Pierce, and others in the hospital.

“Make no mistake: Satan’s specialty is psychological warfare. If he can turn us on God (“It’s not fair!”), or turn us on others (“It’s their fault!”), or turn us on ourselves (“I’m so stupid!”), we won’t turn on him. If we keep fighting within ourselves and losing our own inner battles, we’ll never have the strength to stand up and fight our true enemy.” – BETH MOORE

> SOUP + STORIES THIS SUNDAY 5-7pm @ GNBC Sisters, don’t miss this opportunity to get to know some other women, hear their stories, and tell your story over a bowl of homemade soup.

The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

Mid-week GNBC Family News | Vol 2 – No 10

MARCH 13, 2019

Hi Good News family!

Here’s a few things you should know this week…

> CHRISTMAS IN MARCH! Hope never grows old. Chapter 22 of The Story is a huge transition from looking at the promise of the Messiah in God’s Upper Story — to the arrival of the Messiah in the Lower Story of a teen-age peasant girl! Not exactly what everyone at the time thought the Messiah would be. This Sunday we re-launch The Story in the New Testament. Read Matthew chapters 1 & 2, Luke 1 & 2, and John 1& 2 to prepare (The Story, chapter 22).

> PRAYER & PRAISE…

  • Pray for GNBC students headed to Deep Freeze at Berea this weekend. Pray for God to work in the hearts and minds of the students, and God’s blessing on Justin and the team of leaders with him for the weekend. (Pray for Stef; she has pneumonia and will have to stay home and miss the weekend!) More info online at berea.org.
  • Praise God our sister Diane is home safely from Beth Israel Hospital, Boston.
  • Pray for God to be glorified in the funeral service this weekend in Woodstock, New Brunswick, Canada, for Austin Chartier, 22 months old, (grandson of Cheryl & Don, nephew of Matthew), who crossed over to glory last Sunday morning.
  • Pray for Effie Brandoli, Rich’s wife, facing emergency surgery at Sturdy Hospital after a fall at the Attleboro Healthcare Center nursing home.

> ANNUAL GNBC REPORT MEETING + POT LUCK LUNCH IS SUNDAY MARCH 17 You’re invited! Plan now to stay for a pot luck lunch (bring a main dish + a salad or dessert to feed your family + another family), plus get reports of ministry teams activities in 2018 and plans for 2019, get the GNBC financial update and budget for 2019, and talk together about what is happening at the Chapel now and plans for the future.

“If you’re a church person and not a Jesus person, my heart hurts for you. It’s like being engaged and never getting married. It’s miserable.”
– Matt Chandler

> IF YOU MISSED IT LAST SUNDAY I announced that the GNBC elders are forming a search committee to identify someone to take my position as Teaching Pastor. You can read the full text of that announcement below this email. There will be more details and discussion of the plan at the Annual Report Meeting this Sunday following the Celebration & Growth service.

> MEMORIAL SERVICE PLANS FOR SUE SMITH Sue,68, went home to be with the Lord last Friday morning after a difficult fight with pancreatic cancer. Known to many at GNBC as the co-founder of the Attleboro Emergency Cold Weather Shelter for the homeless hosted at Faith Alliance Church, Sue was a program director for Community Counseling of Bristol County. Memorial service: 2pm Sunday, March 17, at Memorial Baptist Church, 340 Central Avenue, Seekonk.

>CELEBRATE RECOVERY 6:30 EVERY MONDAY NIGHT Our God is a God of rescue and redemption. Help from God’s word — for women and men — for life’s habits, hangups and hurts. Bring a friend who’s hurting and be blessed.

> THE LIFE OF GNBC IS IN LIFE GROUPS Don’t miss this opportunity to grow as a disciple of Jesus and grow closer to new friends in faith. Check out the mid-week Life Group options by clicking here. Then call the host and tell them you’d like to check out their group. You’ll wonder why you waited so long to connect!

Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. Your righteousness is like the highest mountains, your justice like the great deep. How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house; you give them drink from your river of delights.
PSALM 36:5-8

Only by grace,
Steve

Announcement | March 10, 2018
As many of you know my family and I have been attending GNBC since 1973, In fact my wife, Deb’s grandfather help plant this gathering back in 1935. I’ve had the privilege of serving this body as an elder for the past 34 years while I worked in the marketplace, and then as the staff teaching pastor since 2005.
For some time now, The Holy Spirit has shown me that my particular strengths and gifts are not what GNBC needs as it moves forward. I am convinced it is time for a new, fresh voice, and fresh visionary leadership as God leads this church forward on His mission.
So, along with the other elders and at my request, we are beginning a search for a new teaching pastor for GNBC. As much as I have loved having this opportunity to teach, counsel, and mentor here full time, I’m looking forward to what God has planned for me in the next chapter of my life here in Attleboro.
If you want to be part of this search committee, please speak to an elder today. And please plan on attending the annual corporate report meeting and pot luck lunch next Sunday, March 17th, immediately following the C&G hour for more discussion on the search process.
In the meantime I ask each of you to be praying for Good News, for the leaders here, and for me and my family as we all together look for The Lord’s will in this new chapter for GNBC, and a new chapter of ministry that I look forward to.

Mid-week GNBC Family News | Vol 2 – No 9

MARCH 6, 2019

Hi Good News family!

Here’s a few things you should know this week…

> WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN GOD IS SILENT? Let’s talk about it this Sunday at 10:45 as we look at the story behind “the 400 silent years” of the “inter-testamental” period — after the Jews return from exile, but before the arrival of Jesus on the scene. You can’t read ahead this week — because this is the story of what happened in the 400 years between the end of the OT and the beginning of the NT (this chapter is not in The Story!).

> FIRST THURSDAY PRAYER IS ON The power is in the God we pray to. Make a point to be at FTP tomorrow night, 7-8pm, in the lower chapel as we pray for you, for our church family, for our community, nation, global partners…

> PRAYER & PRAISE…

  • Pray for God to be glorified in the full recovery of Austin Chartier, 22 months old, (grandson of Cheryl & Don, nephew of Matthew), suffering severe brain damage after an extended choking incident. His heartbeat and breathing are strong, but there is no other brain response at all. His parents have difficult decisions to make about his life and care.
  • Continue to pray for Melody – June Kohler’s mom (Geddy’s grandmother) – as she faces critical health challenges.
  • Praise God for the followers of Jesus serving at the Attleboro Emergency Shelter on these cold and snowy nights!
  • Pray for our sister Diane, facing difficult treatments at Beth Israel Hospital, Boston, for massive infection.
  • Pray for God to continue to work in the hearts and minds of men at the Men’s Breakfast this Saturday morning.
  • Pray for Ron Baca, an Attleboro veteran about to become homeless with his handicapped son, Carlo. They need a handicapped accessible apartment; they have the necessary funds – just need the apartment. Now. (call/text me if you have an apartment for rent.)

> CALLING ALL GUYS TO BREAKFAST THIS SATURDAY! Check out the men’s breakfast this Saturday morning, 7:30-9:30am in the lower chapel. This is session III in the Stepping Up video series for guys young and old and older. Come and bring a friend.

“We are all faced with a series of great opportunities brilliantly disguised as impossible situations.” – Charles R. Swindoll

> BEREA DEEP FREEZE IS NEXT WEEKEND – March 15-17 Middle School & High School students should talk with Stef and Justin to get a t-shirt and reserve a bunk for a fantastic weekend that will impact your spiritual life forever. Financial aid is available so no student is left behind. (Donations welcome.) More info online berea.org.

> CELEBRATE RECOVERY 6:30 EVERY MONDAY NIGHT Our God is a God of rescue and redemption. Help from God’s word — for women and men — for life’s habits, hangups and hurts. Bring a friend who’s hurting and be blessed.

> YOU’RE INVITED! ANNUAL GNBC REPORT MEETING + POT LUCK LUNCH IS SUNDAY MARCH 17th Plan now to stay for a pot luck lunch (bring a main dish + a salad or dessert to feed your family + another family), plus get reports of ministry teams activities in 2018 and plans for 2019, get the GNBC financial update and budget for 2019, and talk together about what is happening at the chapel now and plans for addressing the future.

> CAN YOU SERVE JESUS FOR 4-5 HOURS? You’re help is needed. You can be the hands and feet of Jesus at the emergency cold weather shelter for the homeless, hosted by our partner, Faith Alliance Church. See Mic Moniz for more information.

> NOT IN A LIFE GROUP? Don’t miss this opportunity to grow as a disciple of Jesus and grow closer to new friends in faith. Check out the mid-week Life Group options by clicking here. Then call the host and tell them you’d like to check out their group. You’ll wonder why you waited so long to connect!

> NEED A RECEIPT FOR 2018 GIVING? Connect directly with deacon/treasurer Art Warner (508.930.4538) for a tax-deductible receipt for your giving to the Lord at GNBC this year.

> MISSED A SUNDAY? You can always get the Sunday sermon here — listen online or download the MP3 — plus get a PDF of the sermon notes, plus a PDF of the weekly Program with announcements, prayer page, gospel page, Global Reach Partners update, and the current Life-Group list, etc. All available each week here.

But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. – 2 Corinthians 4:7-11

Steve
